Republican Leaders and Senate Finance Committee Members Send Letter During “Blank Slate” Process Demanding that Corporations Not Contribute a Dime to Deficit Reduction

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican leaders Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and 10 Republican members of the Senate Finance Committee recently sent a letter to Finance Committee leaders Sens. Max Baucus (D-MT) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT), chairman and ranking member, respectively, to demand that an overhaul of the tax system should “be revenue neutral for the government” and that any “new revenue should be generated from the pro-growth effects of tax reform.”

The following is a statement from Frank Clemente, campaign manager of Americans for Tax Fairness (ATF), a coalition of more than 325 national and state organizations:

“Republicans need to give up on their fetish that tax reform be revenue neutral. That’s like saying that the outcome of the Super Bowl should be pre-ordained to be a tie score. They need to stop worshipping at the altar of the high priest Grover Norquist and start doing what the American people have said they want in poll after poll – make the wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share of taxes.

“It is unconscionable that these senators support trillions of dollars in cuts from services that benefit working Americans while demanding not a dime of sacrifice from the richest corporations in America, some of which pay not one penny in federal income taxes some years. It is immoral to protect huge tax breaks for the richest Americans while demanding further sacrifice from the most vulnerable Americans to achieve more deficit reduction.”

ATF’s letter to U.S. Senators urging them to support a significant increase in tax revenue in their “blank slate” submissions can be found here.
